Crosswalks in Shopping Centers?

Are cars legally supposed to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks in a shopping center (private property)? I almost was run down in one, and when I yelled at the idiot, he said crosswalks don't count in a shopping center!

What about traffic signs in a shopping center, like STOP, or speed limits? Can the police enforce them if they are WITHIN the shopping center? This doesn't include ones that face onto a real street.

Crosswalks in Shopping Centers?
It would be nice if they were legal however there is nothing that can be enforced as far as crosswalks on private property.

The same goes for stop signs and speed limits unless they are for a residential facility, ie a complex of apartments that has the proper signs posted indicating speed limits and stop signs.

If you were struck by a vehicle on private property because you stepped out in front of the vehicle without due care it would be your fault. However if the driver had more than adequate space and time to see you it would be the drivers fault.
Reply:You are supose to stop every where for peds
Reply:Yes %26amp; Yes!!!!
Reply:Crosswalks count and if he hit you it would be his fault.
Reply:Common courtesy takes over sometimes. Boobs exist everywhere tho. Take down the plate number of the violator. Most shopping malls have security. Tell them next time.
Reply:The highway traffic acts are not in force on private properties.Accidental incidents involving autos and pedestrians are a civil matter. Local by-laws concerning such things as fire lanes can be enforced by police agencies.

Exception)In many jurisdictions not paying heed to the stop sign you encounter when exiting the property can lead to a 'failing to stop' charge.

For their own well being neither drivers nor pedestrians should act like they own the place when proceeding through parking lots. You only have one life to live.
Reply:Cross walks count everywhere....you're right he was an idiot.

However you can't assume they're going to stop because you can end up flattened.
Reply:Pedestrians always have the right of way.

Sometimes they walk in the middle of the parking lot drive way and it drives me nuts, like they are just asking to be run down.

At a store in a nearby town several people have been hit walking across crosswalks in front of the store.

Most malls have their own security to watch the parking lots.

I think police can enforce the signs, they should do better enforcing the handicap parking too.
Reply:Yes, they should be binding. I just hope you pay attention before you go, even in a cross walk. Don't be so quick to label someone else an idiot if you started to go just as they were coming.
