Why is supermarket shopping so expensive?

I live in London, but im sure its the same anywhere in the UK.

Why is shopping becoming so expensive, i shop at sainsburys tesco or Morrisons, but they are basically similar in price, Asda which is cheap is miles away.

i can't live without spending about £50.00 a week on shopping, thats budgeting aswel, 5 years ago you could buy enough food for the week, but now MOST things in supermarkets are over £3.00, for 1 item, ie micro meal, fish, meat, enough veg, and drinks, (over £2.50 for a fizzy fruit drink) all the basic makes sainsburys do are really discusting to taste, i find it hard to suvive in this current situation.

Why is supermarket shopping so expensive?
It's a problem here in the US also.

Oil/gas is to expensive, it's making everything go up in price.
Reply:It is all because of the government with fuel prices and what not...More fuel used drives up the cost of everything.
Reply:I live in the USA and everything is going up, except my paycheck.
Reply:The cost of gas (in the U.S) is so high now everyone from the farmer to the person who delivers the food to the store is effected. It just cost more to do everything. I try to buy non-processed foods and family packs, then I break them down into smaller packages and freeze them. We don't really need to gorge ourselves on larger servings either, so I make sides to help fill up rather than a huge piece of fish or meat. Sides are cheaper.
Reply:Get use to it. And try to keep your head above water. Good luck!
Reply:I heard a news report that said food is going up because of the rising middle class in China, they are making more money and demanding more food. They can afford it. I started thinking, the economy of China has improved, for a few years now, its been good to invest in China, people made a lot of money with these investments, but this is how it will negatively effect us all. If people are moving to Middle class there, there are going to be fewer people working for less money, and that is going to directly effect all of us, who are used to paying little for products, because the cost of hiring the worker is so low. Think of all the loss of cheap labor, prices of not only food, but other products made in China will also start to go up. Then I think, if prices go up, companies in China, and everywhere, will start laying off people. They wont be able to pay all their bills because people will stop buying as much. I guess its the basic principles of economics, but the changes in Europe and the United States, are the direct result of the changes in China.
Reply:i moved to london from the us and the prices are scary :)

on a more serious note i do run a discount codes website and we have Tesco vouchers http://www.codes-vouchers.com/index.php/...

and Ocado vouchers - http://www.codes-vouchers.com/index.php/... Also, ocado have times when they deliver for free.

Also tesco has price match so i think they will match this voucher code in store. in the rare case one of the discounts doesn't work for you or you want a particular store's discount email me and i'll try to get it for you.
Reply:It might be like in the United States, the gas goes up the shipment by truck goes up, the the farmers raise there price's, the taxes go up, The corporations and private company's, are ripping all the free country's off, the military costs go up , We need to let the governments know we are fed up with the high price's, and give us all higher wages, we are only going to spend it back into our economy's .
Reply:The price of food is going up daily almost. Nearly everything has been affected and it isn't just a problem in the UK, but world wide.
Reply:it's expensive because oil prices are high, which means gasoline prices are high, which means it costs more to run trucks that ship food everywhere and the food companies still want to make a profit, so they have to charge more to cover the rising gas prices!
