Shopping in London, England?

Where do you recommend to go shopping in London, England? We want to go to traditional shops, not interested in shopping malls. Also not very expensive.

Also looking for a very English bookshop. Will make use of public transport.

Shopping in London, England?
Good for you! Shopping malls are the same old, everywhere!

You can't get more traditionally English than Fortnum and Mason's on Piccadilly!

Next door to Fortnum's is Hatchards, the bookstore, selling books since 1797.

Foyles, on Charing Cross Road, is probably my favourite.

While you're in Piccadilly, the Royal Academy is worth a visit if there's an exhibition on you're interested in. Just opposite Fortnum's. And a little walk down towards Green Park is the Ritz Hotel.

Famous stores include Selfridges on Oxford Street; Liberty, which is just off Oxford Circus on Great Marlborough Street/Regent Street; Harrods and Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge (they're just a few minutes' walk apart) - and I can't think of any more! We've been overtaken by phone warehouses and chains.

Oh, I also recommend a visit to Borough Market, open (I think) on Fridays and Saturdays. It's a food market, and you can sample and eat fairly cheaply there. It's on the South Bank - turn left crossing the Millennium Bridge at St Paul's, and turn left, following the signs. You'll also pass the Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe and the Golden Hinde.

Enjoy your visit.
Reply:Thank you! Tea at the Ritz it is, then... Report It

Reply:There is a bookstore in Oxford, England called Blackwell's that is rather well known. It has a nice selection of travel books nestled away in one corner, so if it's transportation that's troubling you -- you'll know where to locate it.
Reply:You don't say what you want to buy -- but here are some ideas I hope you'll like.

For top quality designer clothes (second-hand but you'd never know) try The Dresser (10 Porchester Place, W2, near the Marble Arch end of Oxford Street). Always worth looking through -- I've come away with some classy bargains.

And for men's clothes Albam (at 23 Beak Street, W1) is a brilliant new find: unlike most, the clothes they sell are UK manufactured, with an eye to quality and detail.

It's also worth doing as Londoners do, and browsing through big department stores such as Selfridges: these days, their winter and summer sales almost merge with their mid-season clearances, so you can often find some very good reductions.

Bookshops....

For the most interesting "very English" bookshops, clustered neatly together in the heart of town, explore Charing Cross Road (WC2) and its side-roads such as Cecil Court, between Leicester Square station and Tottenham Court Road. There are lots of specialist bookshops -- plus Foyles (at one time the largest bookshop in the UK and still almost a national institution.)

Also worth visiting -- particularly since you're interested in saving some money -- is Keith Fawkes' wonderful second-hand bookshop in Flask Walk in Hampstead (come out of the tube station, turn left; Flask Walk is the first turning on the left, a little pedestrianised street).

Have a great time browsing and buying!

Love from a native Londoner. =D
Reply:Try the markets: Portobello Road, Camden Market, Spitalfields Market for interesting shopping.

There's a list here too for other interesting markets:

For the bookshops, you can try these. But im sure there's plenty more:
