Grocery Shopping!?

My hubby and I go grocery shopping every 2 weeks. We have totally opposite views on shopping. Last time he brought a big pack of pork chops (from SAMS CLUB) and said that we were eating that for 2 weeks straight. Now i know there are variety of ways to cook pork chops but I just can't eat the same meat for 2 weeks regardless of how its cooked! My idea is to make a 1week list of meals to eat and then eat one meal on the 1st week and have the same meal one day next week. That way we're not having the same "meat" everyday. Well today we're going grocery shopping. (YIKES!) What would be a good meal list to make for 1 week. Things that are quick and affordable. (Healthy too!) We usually shop at Food Lion if that helps. What are some ideas/tips you use when grocery shopping. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Grocery Shopping!?
I don't know what your budget is but there are many inexpensive cuts of meat that can be slow roasted and are delicious. How about fish? Make the list...get him to look at it and the next time he pulls the pork chop thing serve him the exact same meal every day until it is all gone! You can eat something else...

Reply:I have the same problem as you- that is why i dont take my fiancee shopping with me- i do all the cooking anyways. First we have a budget so I make a list ahead of time and stick to it. Eating the same meat every night is terrible! What I do is plan dinner for a week and buy 3 different things like chicken, ground beef, sausages, etc. You don't need to buy 10 lbs like you do at Sams club- UNless you are feeding a family of 8. Buy less of each meat but enough for 2 weeks. And you dont need to eat meat every night, make pasta, etc one night. That is what I do. BUT, I really thinking that planning all your meals out on a list before hand is extremly important and to get the best deals on a budget- look through the grocery flyers. I may end up going to 2-3 differnt stores (which sucks) but i save money that way!
Reply:Your problem seems to be different philosophies for shopping and cooking.

My advice: Go to the library and get several general cookbooks that offer shopping/food prep and storage advice. Learn from the professionals!

Read those sections for ideas and adopt a general strategy for shopping and storage that you both can see is sensible and frugal.

MY family's WEEKLY schedule is loosely based on this meal-planning for supper guide:

One supper is SOUP and salad and bread

Another is red meat and hearty sidedishes

Two nights of fish, never frozen but always fresh and wrapped at the seafood counter after smelling the fillet/whole fish for freshness (it shouldn't smell like fish!)

One vegetarian supper (like tacos w/beans, cheese sandwiches and tomato soup, cheese pizza, omelets)

Two nights of poultry.

Let your husband know that buying two weeks worth of meat is fine IF most of it is repackaged, dated and frozen for future use. Eating the same meat day after day can wreak havoc on the digestive system and stress your immune system as well. Variety is the key to well-being!
