Shopping hours in Perth?

I have recently moved to Perth and cannot believe the antiquated shopping hours in Perth- shops shut at 6 PM, with only one late night opening (Friday in city, Thursday in suburbs)

Even worse on a Saturday when shops shut at 5PM.

Normally I like to go food shopping etc at about 8PM when it is cooler and quieter

I do not understand why shops cannot open at night. I hear that there have been a couple of referundums on this issue and it keeps getting rejected by the people of Perth

My arguement is not up to the people to decide when I can do my shopping: we live in a supposed free-market. If the shops think they can make a profit extending their trading hours then they should be allowed to.

If the shops cannot find staff then they will not open- simple free market economics.

Instead I am forced to give up my weekend to go the shops as I get home from work after the magic 6Pm cutoff.

Madness!!

Shopping hours in Perth?
The Retail Trading Hours Act 1987 applies in different ways depending on the size of retailer and how many shops they own etc, so strictly speaking food retail which you speak of isn't really those hours at all (9-5) but are upto 24 hours a day seven days a week (24/7) where the retailer is owned by less than six people, has less than 13 employees on the floor and there are no more than three stores owned , eg" Perth's grocery chains like "Farmer Jacks" Foodworks" Super IGA, "Fresh supermarkets" and the like. They qualify for 24/7 trading as Small Retail Shops in the Act.

Woolies and Coles are just too big to comply with the Act, and most of the Large shopping centres decide therefore to close because their big tenants do.

Most of the shops in shopping centres could actually keep trading as either Small Retail Shops (24/7) or Special Retail Shops that can trade between 6.30am and 11.30pm, but they don't have outside access or the political clout to force the centre to keep it's doors open for them.
Reply:1. if shops were to extend and be open an extra 20 hours per week, could you imagine how much more electricity and greenhouse gasses would be let off, allot more than we need.

2. In Perth there are allot more independently owned supermarkets, so the little people get a go, not all of the money goes to the big man and it is shared around a little, that is what cripples the economy , the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, just look at America, its one extreme or the other.

3.The people of Perth like to be individual, WE DON'T WANT TO BE LIKE SYDNEY, i couldn't care less if we are budded as dulls ville, if you don't like it then leave,

4, why don't you get your groceries delivered by ordering off the net.
Reply:Just be grateful you are in sunny Perth! I assume you mean Perth , Australia??????

I think those hours of shoppintg sound fine.
Reply:Dude, I totally agree don't even get me started on daylight saving either. Honestly, these people like living in the middle ages. It's an abomination. That's why I made my site http://www.getmetoamerica.com and am trying to get out of here...........
